Message from the OSA President
MAY 2024
Dear Old Scholars
Welcome to our May edition of the OSA Connections newsletter. I do hope our members are enjoying the new format and scrolling through to peruse all the wonderful information, photos, and activities available.
On behalf of the OSA Committee I would like to thank all the volunteers, that made the OSA Mother’s Day Bazaar such a well-attended, fantastic, and fun St Hilda’s Community event. Please enjoy the highlights of the day in the in the article further in this edition.
Many thanks to our year representatives that attended the thank you evening. The OSA community is grateful for all that you do to keep us connected. A special thanks must go to Ellie Brown (2015) who ran a complementary mat pilates session. This was a great way to start Sunday morning with grandmothers, granddaughters and current boarding students all joining in. This was followed by a light breakfast and plenty of laughter and conversation.
Over the coming months we have the following opportunities and events.
Young OSA Career Accelerator Program
The OSA Committee passed a motion to repurpose the previous careers scholarship to provide two places at this program. Please see further information below.
Young OSA Wine Bar Catchup
Come and enjoy a drink and informal networking and catch-up event at the Hylin in Leederville. Please see below.
The OSA committee is also looking for Old Scholars involved in the property and real estate industry who would be willing to present at our next careers networking evening. Please contact Jane Barker at OSAPresident@sthildas.wa.edu.au .
Please enjoy the read.
Warm regards,
Jane Barker (1986)

2024 Bazaar
The 2024 Bazaar officially opened at 9am on Saturday 11 May with perfect autumn weather. As in previous years there were traditional stalls organised and run by the Old Scholars Association volunteers as well as 40 external stalls selling a huge variety of wares.
We were very glad the forecast storm stayed south of Perth and the visitors to the Bazaar where able to amble through the freshly made produce, kids’ corner, tombola, bric-a-brac and of course, the exquisite flowers for Mother's Day.
We are so fortunate to have produce from across the State thanks to our Boarding families who brought together a delicious selection of produce including home grown and homemade foods, firewood, and garden manure.
Next year we will take pre-orders!
Thank you to all our school families far and wide for your contributions and for bringing the taste of the country to the OSA Bazaar.
Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted with the Bazaar and who spent hours creating home-made gifts. It is always lovely to have the help of over 20 St Hilda's students who assisted on the day and contribute as part of their Community Service hours.
Thank you also to all those bakers who delivered a wonderful array of scones, biscuits, cakes, slices, quiches, and tarts.
The Cake Stall is a big attraction, and the Tea Room was busy all day serving refreshments, sandwiches, and fresh cakes.
Thank you to our young Old Scholars who were instrumental in setting up stalls, working behind the scenes and developing the social media posts.
There was an exciting new range of OSA merchandise available to buy including aprons, keep cups, pens and bags.
Even some future students really enjoyed the day too with the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm being a big hit.
It is also a great opportunity to throw open the doors and welcome our local community to see the changes in St Hilda's, the Heritage Centre, ESSTEAM Studio, our new People Pod Garden situated on the northside of the Una Mitchell Building and the new Bay Cafe.

OS Professor Kate Burridge at the Senior School Assembly Friday 19 April
We were lucky enough to 'snag' Old Scholar Professor Kate Burridge to speak to the whole School at the assembly on Friday 19 April, as she was visiting Perth for her Class of 1974 50 Year Reunion.
Kate is a prominent linguist, specialising in the Germanic languages, now a Professor of Linguistics at Monash University and a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and lives in Melbourne.
Kate left St Hilda’s in 1974 and completed an undergraduate training in Linguistics and German at UWA. This was followed by three years of postgraduate study at the University of London, where she completed her PhD in 1983 on “syntactic change in medieval Dutch”!
Kate also taught at the Polytechnic of Central London before returning to Australia to join the Department of Linguistics at La Trobe University in 1984. In 2003 she took up the Chair of Linguistics in the Linguistics Program in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University. Her main areas of research are language change (i.e. a focus on changing vocabulary and grammar), the notion of linguistic taboo, the structure and history of English. She is extremely productive and has authored / edited more than 20 books on different aspects of language.
Her most recent books are:
Understanding Language Change (with Alex Bergs 2018);
Introducing English Grammar (with Kersti Börjars, 2019);
For the Love of Language (with Tonya Stebbins 2019).
Kate is a regular presenter of language segments on ABC radio and 3AW, and appeared as a weekly panellist on ABC TV’s Can We Help (2007-11). She has also given a TED Talk on euphemism and taboo. We were really thrilled that to hear Kate speak and to have a better understanding of the evolution of slang, euphemism and taboo in our everyday lives.

Mat Pilates at the River with Ellie Brown (2015)
It was great to see so many young old scholars and current boarders turn out for the Mat Pilates event on Sunday 21 April, hosted by Ellie Brown (2015). Many thanks to Ellie for guiding us with her expertise.
It was a lovely way to start the morning on the Freshwater Bay foreshore, followed by a catch-up over a coffee and light breakfast. We hope to repeat the event in the New Year.

OSA Year Representative Drinks
Alison Muir (1990), Rosey Longmire (House, 1982), Fiona Allan (Richmond, 1983) and Jane Barker (1986), President of the OSA.
Penny Keenan (Clowes, 1970), Pam Casellas (Greenway, 1970) and Joanna Hardcastle (Vincent, 1983).
The OSA Year Representative drinks is an occasion to thank our Year Reps for supporting their individual year groups by collecting changes of details, organising reunions and continuing to foster the community throughout our old scholar network. Without a volunteer it is harder to keep in touch with our old scholars and extend our knowledge of ladies and opportunities for the upcoming young.
So thank you again to each of you and it was lovely to see nearly 30 Year Reps on a perfect balmy evening on the veranda of the Heritage Centre for nibbles and drinks, and to the OSA Committee for hosting.

OSA Notices
OSA Career Expo 2024 - OSA Mentors Needed!
Once again we are broadening opportunities for our current students to speak with and learn from our valued professional Old Scholars, to gain insight into different fields of study and work post-school. Years 10, 11 and 12 will attend the seminars to listen to a range of highly engaging professional women with diverse careers and pathways, who will share their varied experiences in small group settings from 1.45pm - 3.25pm. We hope that this event will support students as they make their subject and degree choices for the next academic year and provide an authentic insight into life beyond St Hilda's.
We have had a wonderful response so far, but if there are any old scholars in the following fields, we would love to hear from you.
It is also invaluable for us to have old scholars who might make themselves available to current students in a mentor capacity more generally, or who might be involved in projects as part of the ESSTEAM program. Please drop a line to oldscholars@sthildas.wa.edu.au if you would like to find out more.
If you can bring your experience and wisdom to the table for the benefit of students, please do come and join us.

We are very sad to announce the passing of the following old scholars:
Nicole Bronwasser (Atkins, 1964)
1948 - 19 November 2023
Nicole Bronwasser passed away peacefully on 19 November, aged 76, to join her husband Keith (also deceased) on the many adventures he had planned.
Nicole was a beloved Mum to Jocasta (1991) and Paleeta (1992) and sister to Mike and Sue Leigh Atkins (1961). She was at St Hilda's from 1960 to 1964 and was a House Prefect.
1964 House Prefects. Back L-R: R Arrantash, J Greenway, P Smart, N Atkins, A Foster, B Henning.
Front L-R: J Quartermaine, J Taylor, R McTaggart, C Bott, S Over.
Eleanor Elliott (Ball, 1953)
9 December 1935 - 9 December 2023
Eleanor Elliott (Ball, 1953) of East Fremantle, passed away late last year on her 88th birthday.
Eleanor was a much loved wife of Brian (dec), mother to Tim, and David (dec), mother-in-law to Natalie and grand-mother to Andrew and Felicity.
Eleanor arrived at St Hilda's on 8 February 1949 and left on 6 December 1951. Eleanor is seen in this photograph of the Swimming Champions, in the middle back row between Sheila McRae and Sonia McKellar-Hall and in the front row are Running Champions Cynthia Munday and Romola Clifton. (Photograph was donated by Cynthia Munday.)
Gillian Meecham (Clarkson, 1959)
15 October 1941 - 17 April 2024
Gill Meecham (nee Clarkson), sadly passed away on 17 April 2024, aged 82 years. She was a pupil at St Hilda's School, and a mother to Timothy, Penny Farrell (1987) and Tiffany Tyler (1993), sister to Gaysie Atkinson (1960) and grand parent to Lucy Meecham (2018), Tessa Meecham (2015), and Matilda Tyler.
Gillian lived at the famous Quobba Station near Carnarvon but she was a school girl at St Hilda's from 13 February 1951 until 10 December 1959.
She was a sporty student and here she is holding the cup for the 1959 "A" Hockey Team.
Back L-R: D Gugeri, S Loader, L Moore, P Maley, J MacPherson, W Gronow, Gaysie Clarkson.
Front L-R: C Sudlow, Gillian Clarkson , C Milner
The Chronicle critique records that Gill was Captain and left back.
" Gillian has outstanding ability and always played an intelligent, consistent game with flashes of brilliance which caused her to be awarded Honours. She was one of the most reliable members of the team in that she had never had a "defeatist" attitude, and her stickwork was excellent. As Captain of the team she did a difficult job well, though at times she could have been more forceful in her commands. "

ESSTEAM People Pods
If you’ve visited the Senior School campus this week you might have noticed a stunning addition to our seating options for students. Between our ESSTEAM Studio and Science Centre, are our People Pods Designed by three Year 11 students, Abigael, Audrey and Sophie, as part of their ESSTEAM unit.
The video below shows how the ESSTEAM program brought this project to life from concept to reality. Sophie, Audrey and Abigael (now in Year 11) were key drivers of this initiative through their Year 10 ESSTEAM project last year. In their pitching process, they secured funds to make their vision for this space a reality.
Thanks to mentoring from Empire Home, the girls designed, prototyped and managed the production of 10 bespoke outdoor seating units. It sits in a garden of native plants, with boulders from Abigael’s farm. This showcases the imagination that is being generated in the ESSTEAM program and the value that the School places on student voice.
The People Pods area was being enjoyed by students before lessons even started on Tuesday. Superbly located, extremely comfortable and positioned to encourage conversation, connection and community, I know these Pods will be a space that will be enjoyed by many for years to come.

Philanthropy at St Hilda's: Annual Giving - Ignite a Spark
We commenced our Annual Giving Campaign, Ignite a Spark , this month.
As we do each year, we are turning our attention to creating opportunities for girls who would never be able to access a St Hilda’s education without the generosity of others. Our needs-based bursary program has an enormous impact both for the families who receive them and more broadly our society. We invite you to watch the video 'Dear Stella'. Generations of alumni have been beneficiaries of scholarships and bursaries. You can read some of their stories here.
St Hilda’s would like to thank the many Old Scholars who give regularly to our Annual Giving Campaign. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation and ‘Ignite a Spark’ for a potential boarder, Indigenous student or day scholar, we invite you to donate before the end of the financial year.
Your donation can help us make a difference in a girl’s life. Click here for more information.
