Welcome
Message from the OSA President
APRIL 2024
Dear Old Scholars
Welcome to the April edition of the OSA Connections Newsletter.
The first term is always a busy but very enjoyable beginning to the year. Throughout the newsletter there are fantastic photos from our Bridge and Mahjong Day, a special lunch in honour of Old Scholar Jill Goldsmith nee Maxwell (1952), as well as the St Hilda’s Foundation cocktail party.
Also, some wonderful news of achievements from our inspiring Old Scholar community, as well as a historic win by the 2024 IGSSA St Hilda’s Swimming Team. No doubt seeing the photos of our girls swimming will bring back many memories for past old scholar swimmers. Congratulations on a wonderful start to the year.
The Bridge and Mahjong Day was hosted in the beautiful Heritage Centre. It was a gorgeous day, and as a committee, we appreciate all the Old Scholars and friends who attended as it is one of our annual scholarship fundraising events. Special thanks must go to Treffina Dowland, Jill Binning, and Lizzie Warburton for ensuring the day was so enjoyable.
Many thanks also to the St Hilda’s School Foundation for hosting the ‘Under the Stars Cocktail Party’. It was a beautiful evening enjoyed by many Old Scholars.
The next event on our OSA calendar is our Year Representative Drinks, hosted at the Heritage Centre on the Bay View campus on Thursday 18 April. We greatly appreciate the year representatives in keeping our community informed and connected and are looking forward to an evening catching up.
We are excited about the upcoming OSA Bazaar on 11 May 2024, starting at 9:00am until 2:00pm. It is a great day of fun with local small business vendors and OSA stalls, as well as a teahouse serving a delicious lunch, as well as morning and afternoon tea in the PAC foyer. The beautiful St Hilda’s Boarders' stall is back again, offering beautiful gifts and homegrown produce.
Find more information on the Bazaar 2024 below, and a link to volunteer or donate items to assist us with this event.
Warm regards,
Jane Barker (1986)

New Senior School Athlete Development Program Sponsored by Goldsmith Family
L-R Jo Sudlow (McCall, 1959), Lennie McCall Rush (McCall, 1955), Fiona and Geoff Goldsmith.
On Tuesday 19 March we welcomed Geoff Goldsmith to St Hilda's in honour of his late mother, Jill Goldsmith (1952, Maxwell), and following the Goldsmith family's support of the new Senior School Athlete Development Program. Geoff, and his partner Fiona, together with Old Scholar friends of Jill's, were delighted to visit the ADP program and hear directly from the students.
A memorial plaque in Jill's name was unveiled on the Chapel Memorial Wall and a light lunch was served afterwards in the Heritage Centre where special memories were shared from times gone by. A huge thank you to Jane Barker (1986) who organised an engraved trophy and spoke of the Jill Goldsmith Award, which in conjunction with the OSA, will be presented annually to a student participating in the Athlete Development Program.

OSA Bridge & Mahjong Day
Wednesday 27 March
The Annual OSA Bridge & Mahjong Day was back in the calendar after a break of 2 years due to COVID and the building works of the Heritage Centre. It was wonderful to welcome back 68 ladies, both old scholars and friends, in their tables of four to enjoy the newly refurbished Hope Nicholas House.
The perfect weather made for a lovely day with tea and coffee on the veranda, and lunch and drinks on the other. For some it was also an opportunity to catch up with their granddaughters.

Old Scholar Attends the 2024 Oscars
Our huge congratulations to Jordana Ripp (2000) who contacted St Hilda's this week with a career update. She has been working in Hollywood for about 10 years, previously for Sony Pictures and now as a Digital Talent Manager. She achieved a career milestone on Sunday by attending the 2024 Oscar’s with one of her digital clients who was selected to create content on the carpet and at the ceremony on behalf of The Academy.
"It was an overwhelming experience coming from Perth as a film student and working my way up to where I am today. I’ve worked at many red carpets over the years but finally made it to the biggest one of them all."

VALE
We are very sad to announce the passing of the following old scholars from the Class of 1944:
Mavis Glaskin (Scott, 1944)
8 April 1926 - 18 February 2024
Mavis Glaskin (Scott, 1944) passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday 18 February at the age of 97.
Condolences are extended to her four children Darrall, Gaye, Scott and Fiona and their families. Mavis will be long remembered by all those who knew her as a champion golfer and beautiful, kind lady passionate about her golf and Nedlands Golf Club.
Margaret Whyte (Terry, 1944)
31 December 1926 - 4 March 2024
Margaret Whyte (nee Terry), sadly passed away in Sydney on the 4 March 2024, aged 97 years. She was a pupil at St Hilda's School from 1934 until 1942 when she prematurely left to complete a secretarial course as her mother thought it was very important to have a skill with the threat of a Japanese invasion during the Second World War.
She moved from Perth to Melbourne with her husband in 1962 and had a son, Ross, and daughter, Robyn. The family later moved to Sydney in 1970.
Margaret often spoke fondly of her schooling at St Hilda's and particularly loved the blue blazers. She also talked about the ammonite fossils from Whitby, as her maternal grandfather was born and raised in Whitby, in a seafaring family

IGSSA Swimming Champions
St Hilda's Unprecedented Win Across the Board
Old Scholar Relay Winners: Tilly Banfield (2023), Madison Shallard (2023), Lexie Smith (2021), Charlotte Bass (2023)
For the second year in a row St Hilda's won every year level pennant and the overall Champion trophy at the IGSSA championships at the HBF pool on Friday 8 March. The Old Scholar relay team of Tilly, Madison, Lexie and Charlotte also decisively won their heat.
The atmosphere was electric and our swimmers responded superbly to the cheering and chanting, and each girl hit the water with confidence, fitness and a focus to swim their best. There were many PB’s and memorable moments. The triumphant swimming team left the after celebrations around 11pm, still buzzing and very much looking forward to a well deserved sleep in the next day.
