Fostering Growth and Belonging Beyond the Classroom

At St Hilda's, we believe that education extends far beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. That's why we're passionate about our cocurricular program which offers a diverse range of activities designed to enrich our students' experiences, foster personal growth, and cultivate a vibrant community spirit.

From before-school surfing sessions to holiday programs, our outdoor education offerings allow students to connect with nature, build resilience, and develop valuable life skills. These experiences encourage a sense of adventure and provide a welcome break from the rigours of academic study.

Our cocurricular program boasts a rich tapestry of artistic expression, including Dance, Drama, and Music. From school productions to numerous choirs, orchestras, bands, and ensembles, students have ample opportunities to explore their creativity, hone their talents, and showcase their abilities on stage.

With a strong emphasis on participation and sportsmanship, our cocurricular Sport offering enables girls of all abilities to have a go. Whether it be Tennis for our Kindergarten students, running club, morning fitness or participation in the JIGSSA and IGSSA competition, sport encourages healthy minds and bodies, teamwork, and leadership. We're proud to have one of the highest rates of participation compared to like schools, reflecting our commitment to holistic development.

With over 25 cocurricular clubs and committees in the Junior School and over 40 in the Senior School, there truly is something for everyone. Whether it's debating, book club, art, mindfulness, Swimming, public speaking, or STEAM activities, to name just a few, students have the opportunity to pursue their passions, explore new interests, and build lasting friendships across a range of year groups.

One of the unique aspects of St Hilda's cocurricular program is the opportunity for our students to engage in coeducational activities with surrounding boys' private schools. Including Carve and Create a cooking and woodwork activity, swing dancing and activity days that culminate in coeducational outdoor education opportunities, to name a few. This collaboration not only broadens horizons but also promotes teamwork, communication, and mutual respect.

Cocurricular activities at St Hilda's extend beyond the four walls of the classroom, providing students with a platform to develop essential life skills, such as communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Whether it's before school, during lunchtime, or after school, these activities create a vibrant and inclusive community where girls can thrive and flourish.

The benefits of our cocurricular program are manifold. By engaging in a diverse range of activities, students are provided with the opportunity to broaden their horizons, discover their passions, and forge lifelong friendships with like-minded peers. We're committed to providing a holistic education that nurtures the whole individual, and our cocurricular program is an integral part of that mission.

Changing children’s lives in Ukraine

Last year the Ignited Minds Committee ran a fundraiser for the Stellar Ukraine charity which supports school children in the Ukraine to achieve their academic goals. Over $800 was raised and this was allocated to purchasing a much-needed photocopier for a local school in the city of Rivne. Schools in Ukraine suffer severe funding shortages, making preparations for classes close to impossible. The photocopier is a game-changer for the school.

Teacher, Victoria Kamlochuk and her family including daughter Polina visited St Hilda’s last year and shared their stories of how the war has affected their lives in Ukraine. Polina spent two days in our Year 5 classrooms last year and says she would dearly love to return to St Hilda’s in high school. We hope to make this dream a reality.

St Hilda’s students have continued to write letters to their Ukraine pen pals over the Christmas break. If your child would like to be involved in the pen pal program, you can sign up through the Stellar Ukraine website.

Empower women in need for International Women’s Day

Our Community Service theme for Term 1 is Empowering Women. So, after a fruitful relationship with Dress for Success last year, we are again partnering with this important charity for International Women’s Day.

Dress for Success Perth was co-founded by a St Hilda’s parent, Rachael Hain. Her daughter Elizabeth spoke passionately about the cause last week in Senior School, urging the girls to donate work clothes in good condition in the lead up to International Women’s Day this year.

Dress for Success Perth empowers vulnerable Western Australian women with the professional clothing, career tools and confidence they need to reach employment. Donations of lightly used, interview-appropriate women's clothing help their clients to rebuild their confidence and overcome bias.

Thank you for your support in this worthwhile endeavour. To donate clothes, please drop donations at the Junior School and Senior School receptions.

Message from the Director of Junior School

Last week I shared the Leadership Homily written by The Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd AM and a poem developed by Head Girl Estella Herron. In their messaging, they brought the four core school values to the forefront of our minds. Following the delivery of their message, the importance of our school values has been discussed at a deeper level in classrooms, where students are developing the rules and expectations their class will live by. Furthermore, they looked at how they, as individuals, are going to achieve their personal best, be the best person and lift those around them.

Listening to what the students shared reinforced how important the School’s values are to them. It was heartwarming to hear students share that they needed to help each other, encourage each other and focus on noticing the good things that are happening around them. The students, in their discussions, focused on key parts of the homily shared last week. I would like to remind you of this by putting a spotlight on the Belonging section of the homily written by The Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd AM:

BELONGING - Here at St Hilda’s we look out for each other. We’re ‘there’ for each other.  We notice when one of us is sad.  And we help out.  So, we belong to each other.  No-one is excluded or cut out.  No-one is ‘in’ or ‘out’.

Which means that in this school – St Hilda’s - you are never alone.  You are part of the whole community. You belong.  And you are valued.  And welcome.

We all want to belong; it is lovely to be able to share that a sense of Belonging was enjoyed on Sunday at the P & F Junior School Sundowner. While there were many wonderful activities that brought a lot of fun to the event, the true joy resonated in the connections that were taking place between the families. Thank you to the P & F for hosting this event and providing an opportunity for families to connect. As we move through this year, I encourage you to look at the School’s calendar and put in your diary a ‘save the date’ for upcoming events, so that we can continue to come together to connect, support each other and celebrate a wonderful year.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Yours faithfully,

Swimming Lessons and Interhouse Swimming Carnival

Dear Parents,

As part of our Physical Education curriculum, all girls will participate in daily swimming lessons from Monday 5 February until Tuesday 20 February (Weeks 2 - 4), culminating in the Interhouse Swimming Carnival on Thursday 22 February.

All Year 5 and 6 students will be required to be dropped at the Bayview Campus instead of Chidley Campus from 7.55am onwards, where they will be supervised by teachers in the Library and escorted to swimming lessons which begin at 8.30am.

Parents, please drop your daughters off at the Palmerston Street entrance, where a teacher will be waiting, no earlier than 7.55am.

If your child attends a cocurricular activity at Chidley Campus before school hours, there will be a St Hilda’s bus organised to transport them after their activity to the Senior School Campus, with teacher supervision. There is no need to sign up for this bus, it will be available to all Year 5 & 6 students who require it.

If your child normally catches the bus to Chidley Campus, they must get off at Palmerston Street. There will be a teacher there to direct them to the Library.

Year 3 and 4 students will be transported to and from school via bus during school time.

All students must wear their correct uniform, with PE uniform being allowed on timetabled PE days. If your daughter attends a cocurricular sporting activity before school she will attend in her PE uniform and can change to her formal uniform after swimming lessons.

For Swimming lessons please support them in packing the following items:

School bathers
House cap
Googles
Sunscreen
Towel
Shoes (thongs/slides appropriate for bus transfer, sneakers required to and from school)

Warm regards,

Emily Smrcek & Jaxon Hogan

Message from the Director of Senior School

On Saturday evening our Year 12 cohort had their Ball at Fraser’s Kings Park. The evening was full of elegance. A special thank you must be extended to Head of Year, Wendy Rickarby, the Year 12 Homeroom teachers and Event Coordinator, Sally Bryant, for ensuring the event was a success.

Mid-week we welcomed our 2023 graduates back onto campus to celebrate their achievements and to hear of their plans for 2024. This was all part of their formal welcome into the Old Scholars Association (OSA). OSA member, Ella Morison (2016) and addressed the cohort on the benefits of engaging with the association and on what levels they can participate. The event also provided staff an opportunity to reconnect with our graduates and in turn, our graduates once more extending their appreciation to the teachers for their support and guidance over their secondary journey.

On Thursday, the Senior School ventured to HBF Stadium for the Interhouse Swimming Carnival. Thank you to our Physical Education Department for their commitment and professionalism in coordinating such an inclusive carnival. Congratulations to the winning students and to Blackwood House on their exceptional results.

If you missed the livestream, please click on the link here .

In Week 3 we look forward to welcoming two exchange students from Durban Girls School, South Africa, into Year 10. I wish to extend my appreciation to the two St Hilda’s host families for supporting these students during their time in Perth.

Yours sincerely,

Andrea McNally
Director of Senior School / Deputy Principal

Junior School Family Fun Day

Last Sunday’s Junior School Family Fun Day was a huge success.

Put on by the School and supported by the P&F, we had beautiful sunny skies and all the kids' favourites including face painting, sausage sizzle, bubble play, a bouncy castle, petting zoo and, of course, the Mr. Whippy van.

Perhaps the highlight was the Chung Wah Lion Dance Troupe who opened up the event in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

A great way to start the school year and for the Junior School students and their families to catch up and have fun!
